Ninth Annual Charleston Cinco de Mayo Festival

When: Sat., May 3, 7-11 p.m. 2014
Phone: (843) 813-2505
Price: $10-$15
“Although it is technically a Mexican holiday, the festival strives to promote all Latin customs,” says Cinco de Mayo festival coordinator Luigi Bravo. “This event is to promote Latin heritage through music, food, and dance.” This year the festival welcomes Bachata Flow, a musical group that will introduce you to the all-the-rage Bachata movement. Bachata is a genre of music that hails from the Dominican Republic and combines Latin American- and African-styled music. The music keeps bumping with DJ Luigi’s Latin Groove mixes. And what’s great Latin music without a little bit of dance instruction? A Zumba exhibition will be presented, along with professional dance performances from Jaramillos Latin Dance Academy, Elite Dance International, and Charleston Latin Dance. A little liquid courage never hurt anybody’s dance moves, so take full advantage of the eight different brands of tequilas offered at the event’s tasting — just don’t eat the worm. Also, expect a full spread of authentic Mexican and Puerto Rican food, including tacos, burritos, and empanadas. Enjoy the tequila free of charge, but remember food costs extra.
