While I stand by Nikki Haley's decision to remove the confederate flag due to the tragedies at Mother Emmanuel, I agree that history cannot be rewritten. George Santayana quoted, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." We learned from a period of history that is now viewed completely differently than it was 200 years ago. Humans have progressed beyond that era. But, not embracing it is as bad as forgetting it ever happened. No one would ever assert that the Holocaust should be swept under the rug. Both are human atrocities that SHOULD have never happened, but they did. To the people who lived it and shaped history during the Antebellum period in the South, it was a lifestyle and an everyday occurrence. They didn't associate it with bigotry and hatred like we do today, unfortunately. I believe that's what she's trying to say, and I agree with her.
