Coming upon this story, my son emailed it to me. Soon someone will doubtless comment that my suggested removal of John C. Calhoun from, inter alia, the pillar in downtown Charleston is an attempt to rewrite history, to remove this important person. Not at all. His statue atop that column is intended to honor him and the things for which he stood and worked. We should stop honoring him and the things for which he stood and worked. It is precisely good history that demands that we do so.
