With her intimate paintings of women and bold geometric patterning, Karen Ann Myers has become one of Charleston’s most recognizable local artists. Her upcoming exhibit Escapism will feature signature works such as “Double Diamonds” and some self-portraits in addition to new works, all exploring the psychology of contemporary female sexuality. “Karen’s work not only gives us a glimpse into what it is like to be a woman in today’s society, but when you are able to view the work in person, you also garner an appreciation for the tediousness of her process,” says Robert Lange Studios Gallery Director Curry Ernst. Myers says she titled the exhibit Escapism because of her tendency to withdraw from reality through her intense connection with her work. “My hope is that viewers project their own experiences into the narratives of my paintings, escape into another reality and withdraw from their chaotic lives, as they are confronted with a highly sensual scene, multiple patterns, textures, and bold color,” she says. —Samantha Connors
