Confabulous

This weekend, New Music Confab (NMC) will take over downtown with Charleston’s first music conference. Think SXSW in its beginning stages. “The Charleston music scene now reminds me a lot of the Austin music scene back when I used to go to South by Southwest in the mid ’90s,” says NMC founder, Columbia resident Dave Stewart. “It’s funny because people say, ‘Wow, do you think Charleston is where Austin is?’ And I say, ‘Well, not now, but that’s where Austin was.” Stewart, a 25-year radio veteran, has put together several panels with over 40 music industry professionals (including A&R managers, radio promoters, reps, entertainment group CEOs, and yours truly) and five showcases featuring over 30 music acts at both the Charleston Music Hall and the Music Farm. The panels will discuss topics like how new artists can get noticed, branding, and wheeling and dealing, while the showcases will include artists like Weaving the Fate, the Piedmont Boys, Haley Mae Campbell, Shelly Waters, Tyler Boone, Death of Paris, the Stepping Stones, and much more. So who should should come to NMC? “If you’re an artist it’s a great opportunity to network,” says Stewart. And he knows the value of a network particularly from putting the conference together. “I’ve spoken to people that I would have never never said, ‘Wow, this is one of my best friends in the industry,” he says. “But the support that I’ve gotten from these folks in Austin, New York, Nashville, and Los Angeles) has been unbelievable, and it all goes back to this: you have to build your network.” And unlike most music conferences, this one’s affordable for new artists. Stewart says, “I like the idea of being able to bring together people that can afford to go and spend time with people who have been in the industry and have a lot of experience to share.” For times and more information, go to newmusicconfab.com.
