Re: “Veto-proof S.C. House majority approves roads bill compromise with 12-cent gas tax increase

How about pay-per-use? If I only drive from my home to the office and a few local shops each day, why should buying gas here pay for local Upstate legislators' highways to nowhere?

What if the longer interstates had tolls? They wouldn't make sense for a small roadway like 526, but maybe for I-26, 85, 95, 20, 77..? If I have to drive to Columbia, I'd rather pay a one-time $5 toll than spread it out among gas tank refills for local or other area use.

How about rest stops? They keep closing the outdated sketchy ones throughout the state to save money. What if we privatized them and charged gas station operators and restaurants to lease them? Couldn't that revenue be used to fund roadway maintenance?
