Hip-hop/funk group Nappy Roots brings its Kentucky-fried soul and funk to Charleston this Friday. The ensemble headlines behind a new disc titled Pursuit of Nappyness — a 16-track collection that hit the streets in June. The group formed as a six-piece in 1995 in the college town of Bowling Green, Kentucky. Skinny DeVille, B. Stille, Ron Clutch, Big V, R. Prophet, and Milledgeville released their full-length debut, Country Fried Cess, in 1998. Major labels took notice of the Nappy’s uniquely “country” style, and the group eventually signed to Atlantic. Bolstered by the chart success of the funky singles “Awnaw” and “Po-Folks,” 2002’s, Watermelon, Chicken, and Gritz, made a big splash. R. Prophet left the group in 2008 to pursue a solo career, but the five-man collective pressed ahead. They consider the self-produced, independently released Pursuit of Nappyness to be their “best and most honest work yet.” —T. Ballard Lesemann
