Re: “Race and politics under the palmetto tree

I disagree with your last comment, Damon. Al Sharpton could never be in the White House because whites would not vote for him -- never! Barack Obama is in the White House because he could transcend race and bring whites into his tent. Al Sharpton and Robert Ford are stuck being old fashioned and angry. They will never reach beyond a black base.

Re: “As If We Didn't Know: Study Shows Racial Resentment Fuels Teabagger Movement

Most of these comments confirm my worst fears. Much ranting and raving about science, but no evidence that any of the ranters and ravers actually read the study or even the executive summary. It was a well conceived and well executed study and it arrived at what I consider to be very reasonable conclusions. Not one of the ranters or the ravers has analyzed or criticized the conception or the execution of this study. Even Jack Hunter commented without reading -- a disappointing performance, indeed.

Facts are hard things, especially when you do not like them. But ranting and raving does not make them to away.

Re: “Whitewashing History — Don't Let Neo-Confederates Make a Lie of the Past

Jack, speaking as a race-obsessed liberal, I know a race-obsessed conservative when I see one. Willful blindness is an obsession and the white people of the South have been blind to the elephant in their living room for many generations. It requires a lot of energy, a lot of coercion and a lot of obsession to keep so many so blind for so long. Leonard Pitts addressed the white conservative obsession in his April 15 column, which ran in the Post and Courier and other papers around the country. I'm sure it won't open your eyes, but here it is:…

Re: “Fan Mail

Ken's email is proof yet again of the violent passion that can be aroused in defense of dead children and unborn children. But where are these defenders of children when our children go without decent education, decent nutrition, and the other advantages, large and small, that make childhood rich and rewarding and secure? Yes, it's easy to be outraged when it doesn't require any commitment other than shooting off your mouth.
