Momma Brown’s to close on Halloween

The Mt. Pleasant barbecue joint hopes to relocate

After a 15-year run at the corner of Center Street and Ben Sawyer Blvd., the casual, Southern-style eatery Momma Brown’s Bar-B-Q will close at 3 p.m. on Sun. Oct. 31. Proprietor Mary Alice Brown Knight, a Kingstree native, says her lease has expired and was not renewed after renting month-to-month over the last year.

Situated in what used to be a 7-11 convenient store at 1471 Ben Sawyer Blvd., Momma Brown has been an East Cooper favorite for years. Known for its sizeable, all-you-can-eat buffet and Pee Dee-style vinegar-based barbecue, the restaurant offered an array of Southern and Lowcoutry dishes, ranging from candied sweet potatoes and fried chicken to pilaus and puddings.

Knight and her team plan to relocate to a new spot early in 2011. They’ll continue to offer catering through the fall and winter, using smoked pork from family-related barbecue venues in Kingstree and Moncks Corner. Call (843) 849-8802 for more info.
