Re: “Jewish Soldiers in Blue and Gray uncovers a whole new side of the Civil War

Wow !

I saw this at my shul last night. And I sat there horrified because if I opened my mouth during the discussion afterward, I would have been crucified by all my fellow brainwashed PC congregants.

I'm a Yankee who has gone beyond all the Lincoln worshiping BS I was taught in my Long Island high school.

Of course this documentary focuses on slavery as if there could not have been any other possible reason for the War of Northern Aggression. But if slavery was the reason, did we really need a war with more than half a million killed to end slavery? I don't know, but somehow other western nations that also had slavery found a way to abolish it without bloodshed.

Slavery wasn't the cause. It became the excuse; the excuse of the victors. So slavery had to be demonized beyond any other human condition. As a Jew and a descendant of people killed in Europe less than 70 years ago I find it obscene, OBSCENE, that anyone would think that the lives of African slaves in the Southern States were even comparable in harshness to that of my great-grandmother from Berlin.

People who own farm animals generally do not treat them harshly. Why would the same people who owned African slaves treat them harshly? Sure there might be exceptions but it just doesn't make sense to this Yankee Jew that someone would buy a slave so he could whip and torture the slave. My understanding is there were laws about how slaves were to be treated in their youth and in their old age, and in between. The slaves were fed and clothed and housed. They were given a
sabbath day of rest. Sure, it wasn't all sweetness and light for them; but is it for anyone? My own guess is that I would much rather have been Thomas Jefferson's slave than a coal miner in West Virginia. (I suggest reading Fremantle's =Three Months in the Southern States= for a first hand account of a neutral observer, supposedly opposed to slavery. It's not an advocacy novel! And then there's Aristotle's =The Politics=, but what did Aristotle know?!)

And as for the Sainted Abe who "tried to negotiate an end to the war": Go to his Lincoln Memorial and read the word chisled on the wall there: "With charity for all and malice towards none." These come from his second inaugural address given more or less at the same time as he was ordering his general to burn widows and orphans out of their homes.

Southern Jews fought for the South because their homes were being attacked. The real question is, why did they Jews in the North go along with it all.
