Re: “Over 200 rally for Charleston Birth Place’s survival

I was a hospital transfer from Charleston Birth Place to Trident Hospital- one the very people these regulations are meant to protect - and I COMPLETELY DISAGREE with DHEC's new and unnecessary change to their interpretation of their own regulations. If I was forced to wait for an OB to come to the birth center before being transferred simply to agree with my midwife's already correct diagnosis (an unnecessary and dangerous step) it would have put both my daughter's and my life in danger. If DHEC changes their interpretation mothers and babies will be put at risk for bureaucratic and completely arbitrary NON-MEDICAL reasons. I am grateful for the professionalism, competence and efficiency of the midwives at CBP. Furthermore, even though I am no longer a candidate for natural birth, I plan to continue using the midwife model of care for all future pregnancies. It is a safe and cost-effective choice for any woman. I urge DHEC not to reinterpret their own guidelines and adopt the stricter national standards that which CBP already abides.
