Re: “The reaction to the Secession Gala says as much about its critics as attendees

Look, I was born and raised in Charleston, just like my father and grandfather, could probably join Sons of the Confederacy if I wanted, but this is just the type of stuff that makes me think with despair that we're just the dumb rednecks that everyone else thinks we are. Why would you celebrate and romanticize something which led to hundreds of thousands of needless deaths, which if "our" side had won would have led to the indefinite perpetuation of an inherently evil institution, and which did lead to our state and region becoming a social and cultural backwater for well over a hundred years? Get real... your and my ancestors may not have been evil, but they fought and died for an evil cause.
Do we have big nuclear bomb parties on the Hiroshima anniversary? That to my mind was way more justified morally, though not at all clear-cut, than the Ordinance of Secession but it seems the height of historical blindness not to recognize the absolute horror of both - not to mention that it would have sucked for the world if the allies had lost WWII, but I am really, truly glad that RE Lee and Jeff Davis proved to be as incompetent in their respective roles as they were reprehensible in their political and social values.
