It’s been too long since we’ve spent the afternoon on the Citadel campus, going right past the cadets to the McAlister Field House, where roller-skating women with cleverly punned names circle around a track for hours and hours. Yes, it’s roller derby season once again, and the Lowcountry Highrollers will have their first bout this weekend. “I think I can speak for the whole league when I say that we are extremely excited to be a full-fledged Women’s Flat Track Derby Association member league this season,” says Camille Kale, otherwise known as Hurricane Camille. “We are going to be traveling farther than ever — New Orleans, Alabama, Tallahassee — and playing some very challenging teams this season. It’s really going to take the Lowcountry Highrollers to a new level of competition.” In their season opener, Militia of Love, the LCHR All-Stars and Bruisin’ Betties take on the Charlotte Roller Girls All-Stars and B Dazzlers. An after-party will take place at the Tin Roof. This month’s featured charity is We Are Family, which benefits gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and intersex youths in the tri-county area.
