Re: “Hominy Grill

What- am I missing something, here? I though Hominy Grill was some sort of breakfast paradise. I've heard plenty of rave reviews and damn near everyone from out of town want to go there for breakfast, but why? I went this morning and noticed a few things both positive and negative; starting with the overall atmosphere, which was notably good. I loved sitting outside with all the foliage and bamboo. Unfortunately that's pretty much it for the positives... the server was nice- personality wise anyway. Let's start with the coffee: it tasted like regular Folgers or Maxwellhouse and maybe I'm spoiled, but I don't plan on paying more than $1 on cofee that comes in a can. Speaking of coffee I didn't get anything to stir that coffee with until it was cold. Service aside, the food was mediocre. After ordering a "Nasty Biscuit" and a cup of grits I came to the following conclusions: the grits are great, and the biscuits are decent, their gravy tastes like liquefied pimento, and their fried chicken tastes like a frozen chicken finger that they left in the oven a few minutes too long. So why do people keep insisting that this is some amazing mecca of morning goodness? Why was Hominy built up to this great pillar of the Charleston food scene? I'd much rather hit up Jack's or even Brueger's Bagels than Hominy Grill again. Maybe I'm bitter because I ran a little late for work today, maybe I'm testy because I have heartburn, maybe I happened by on an off day or maybe- just maybe- Hominy Grill isn't that great. My coworker seems to think it's the latter, anyways.
