Mike Doughty: The Question Jar Show, Hit or Miss

When: Tue., Feb. 9 2010
Price: $15 (adv.)
Former Soul Coughing frontman-turned-solo poet/guitar-slinger Mike Doughty is a man of many words. He’s also a man of few words, sung over and over and over. Doughty’s got a knack for writing hooks that stick in your head, with choruses that build in intensity over repeated phrases. Take the slow burner “Lord Lord Help Me Just to Rock Rock On,” off his new disc Sad Man Happy Man, as a prime example. Or with the echoing, “You should be, you should be doubly doubly, you should be, you should be doubly gratified.” But what makes Doughty special isn’t just his incredible sensibility for intelligent pop catchiness; it’s the depth of the words tucked into his verses. Visit his website and you’ll find a wealth of self-aware musings that find humor in everything from depression to Lady GaGa. He’s even making a picture book about his travels in Eritrea. Doughty’s one interesting man. At this acoustic Pour House gig he’ll be joined by his trusty upright bassist, Andrew “Scrap” Livingston. They’re both fresh off a European tour last week, so let’s hope they’re both feeling like the Happy Man. See for more. —Stratton Lawrence
