Being British it is often fun to read about new people experiencing cricket — the story was linked on a cricket news feed — and this was an enjoyable read.

One thing I did want to add though is that some fielders do wear helmets and padding if they stand close to the wicket. "Silly mid on" is such a fielding position, named as such for the following reasons:

"On," because they stand on the on-side, the half of the field behind the batter. The side the batter faces is the off-side and there is correspondingly a silly mid off.

"Mid," because they are positioned parallel to the the middle of the wicket.

And "Silly" because being only three or four yards from a batter who may hit a ball bowled at speeds of up to 100mph directly towards you is a very silly place to stand!
