Re: “Letters to the editor

As a Veteran of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, and as a South Carolina Firefighter I feel an obligation to respond to this article. I joined the Armed Forces prior to September 11th and I knew at that time that enlisting in the Military was a choice that could put me in harms way. I took an oath to defend against all enemies both foreign and domestic. Most of the people fighting over there now have done so after the start of the war. So for you to say these kids joining the military now and dying in Iraq dont have a choice? You are dead wrong! And a lot of communities of lost soldiers do pull together and "fund raise" and so on to help the families left behind. On top of the $500,000 death benefit they will recieve from SGLI. You say those 9 men didn't die as heroes? You must have a pretty warped definition of what a "hero" really is. Those men said goodbye to thier families and went to work every third day and put their lives on the line in hopes that they could help save a strangers life. I hope you never have to experience a fire in your home but if you do the BRAVE Men and Women of the Mount Pleasant Fire Department will be there. They will respond and act without hesitation and risk their lives for you and your family. If you dont want to give, if you dont want to throw your spare change in a fire boot, thats fine. Noone will think any less of you. But to bash a community that came together and supported this great cause is ludacris. Shame on you! Why dont you get out and start your own fund raiser for our troops? Do something more productive than writing letters.
