The soulful, string-based, foot-stompin’ duo of Megan Jean and Klay Byrne have been leading a nomadic lifestyle this season, traveling across the South and up through the Midwest with a rickety vehicle and a slew of vintage instruments (an antique six-string, a full-sized upright bass, stompbox, tambourine, etc.). They return this week to celebrate Megan Jean’s 28th birthday at the Tin Roof with a set of songs from their new studio album, Dead Woman Walkin’. “The road has been pretty crazy,” says Megan Jean. “We’ve forged a path for us through Louisiana and into Texas as well as making tracks in Indiana and Ohio. We totaled our car outside of Atlanta two weeks ago. It was extremely stressful, but we got into a loaner car from a superfan — my dad — then headed out to western Tennessee to pick up where we left off.” This week’s show is the duo’s first gig in town in months. Atlanta trio Shathouse Rats — guitarist Matt Shat, drummer Trey LeTrash, and keysman Byronius Junk — add their swamp-blues/garage-rock set. Shake It Like a Caveman’s new trio bring their Coastal Surge Tour to town (see story on p. 122) with support from garage-rock duo Pleasure Chest.
