Almost 200 miles northwest of Charleston lies a soon-to-be organic farm specializing in raising happy and healthy sheep and hogs for a Lowcountry farm-to-table retail and wholesale business. McCullough Farms is run by husband and wife Bill and Kathy McCullough, who’ve spent the last three years transitioning their land to completely organic. On the farm, animals are free to roam the acres where they live with their family groups and graze freely. The McCulloughs raise Tunis sheep and Berkshire hogs for meat, chickens for eggs, and horses for leisure. Their products are available in restaurants like Rue de Jean, Oak, the Macintosh, and Cypress, and for individual purchase. If you want to see the farm for yourself, give them a call and pack your tent — the property has room for camping as well as a small cottage for visitors. The family is also renovating their historic 1810 log house, which they hope will provide more space for guests interested in a farm holiday with the promise of friendly people, happy animals, riding trails, and kayaks for the river. If you don’t want to stay for the night, the McCulloughs still encourage you to drop by for a visit. They like the company almost as much as the animals do.
