Mary Jackson receives NEA Heritage Fellowship

Magic of sweetgrass

Award-winning local sweetgrass basket weaver Mary Jackson continues to make the Lowcountry proud with her recent acceptance of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Heritage Fellowship, a one-time award of $25,000. This marks the newest honor for the artist, who previously received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Museum for Women in the Arts and the MacArthur Fellowship, among others. As a founding member of the Mt. Pleasant Sweetgrass Basket Makers’ Association, Jackson also fights to protect the wetland habitats of sweetgrass. The 2010 Heritage Fellows will meet in September in Washington D.C. for a series of events.
