Martha Graham was the woman who discarded the unnecessary adherence to staid classical form and movement, and brought human emotion back into contemporary dancing. She told PBS that her goal was “to begin not with characters or ideas, but with movements ... I wanted significant movement. I did not want it to be beautiful or fluid. I wanted it to be fraught with inner meaning, with excitement and surge.” Without the progressive steps of this company, there would have been no Michael Jackson, no Madonna, no Justin Timberlake. Generally accepted as the mother of modern dance, her wide-ranging influence on this world is hardly susceptible to overstatement. And while Graham is no longer with us, her students have carried on the mission of the company, continuously striving to push to the limits what the human body can express. You can experience the wonder of the Martha Graham Dance Company this fall at the Galliard Auditorium, thanks to the Charleston Concert Association.
