Mark Holland's Rhythm Force

When: 2009
Price: $5
First came Jennyanykind, the bluesy psych-rock band that saw Mark Holland and his then-band mates ride the peak of ’90s alterna-hype to a short-lived major label deal before returning to the Piedmont and signing with Yep Roc as their career angled downward. Then there was Jule Brown, largely a Mark Holland solo project that distilled Jennyanykind’s rock back to its folk and blues elements. But that was the past, and the present for the veteran comes with Rhythm Force, a freshly minted quartet that runs through the electric appeal of Jennyanykind and the down-home comfort of Jule Brown, spinning gyres of psychedelic guitars through jam band percussion and bluesy grooves. Indeed, Holland seems to have found his proper place with Rhythm Force, treating the blues more as a foundation than a monument, and planting seeds of rock, funk, and jam band influences into the fertile Piedmont soil from which Rhythm Force’s muse springs. —Bryan Reed
