Re: “Protesters threaten to shut down Ravenel Bridge toward Mt. Pleasant at 4 p.m.

It is so annoying that the default assumption is that race was a relevant factor in the shooting. It makes it too easy to ignore bigger and more pervasive problems.

The obvious fact is that North Charleston cops are badly in need of better training, more professional attitudes, and improved communication skills. I am VERY pro-police, but my experience in South Carolina is that too many police officers are egregiously poorly trained. We can fix that! Raise taxes if you have to, but get these poor 300-pound bubbas some training in conflict de-escalation, Verbal Judo, Community-based Policing (and, unfortunately, basic manners for some). Teach them that not every problem requires a hammer to fix it, and then give them some other tools.

They have a VERY IMPORTANT job, and it is a VERY HARD job. It is made harder by the inadequacy of their skill sets, and the unprofessional behavior of some of their fellow cops. Right now local cops need us all to push for better training and higher standards, and frankly, better pay for well-trained, highly skilled individuals. Maybe the right statements amongst all this media attention will get the City Council to budget for the training our thin blue line needs.
