Main Library to show The World of Julia Peterkin: Cheating the Stillness

Sister Act

In 1929, South Carolina author Julia Peterkin won a Pulitzer Prize for her novel Scarlet Sister Mary, about a Gullah orphan raised on a plantation in the Lowcountry. The controversial book was banned in one S.C. town. Peterkin is now the subject of an ETV documentary titled The World of Julia Peterkin: Cheating the Stillness. The Main Library (68 Calhoun St.) will have a free screening of the film on Wed. April 28, with a reception at 5:15 p.m. and the presentation at 6 p.m. Afterward, Producer Gayla Jamison and Editor Deanna Nowell will lead a discussion.
