Re: “Cannonborough-Elliotborough residents aim to head off late-night drinking problems

The underlying issue has little to do with Warehouse or Cutty's as this article suggests, it's how many additional bars and what type of bars this neighborhood can handle. Residential has been the dominant use in this neighborhood since the 1800s. The recent onslaught of proposed bars and liquor stores is new and is a result of investors looking for late night booze profits by taking advantage of outdated zoning. The City is wisely trying to get new bars to close earlier than 2am so as not to undermine the stability of the neighborhood and turn the neighborhood into an extension of Upper King St. Is having bars that choose to open up in a residential area close a few hours earlier really that controversial? Would you want to live next door to a new bar that's open until 2am, 7 days a week, especially if you bought a place? What if you want to live in this neighborhood and like the location and mix of people but can't stay up until 2am every night? It's a progressive neighborhood and will continue to get better but why can't we keep the velvet ropes on Upper King?
