Re: “Over 200 rally for Charleston Birth Place’s survival

I had my first child at CBP in 2009. Lesley Rathbun was there through my entire labor, she was completely adept and made me feel incredibly secure during my pregnancy and labor, especially as a very young first-time mom. Although my daughter's father and I were reluctant about ultrasounds, Lesley sent me to an obstetrician for an ultrasound 3 weeks before my due date, and again one week before my due date as she had concern I was placenta previa. It turns out that I was not, but I still value her insistence that I have it checked out even if the result had meant I could not give birth in the birthing center. She also helped encourage my labor to begin, it finally did at 11 days late but would have been unable to birth at the center if I had passed my due date by 14 days. She was very clear and concise about this policy from the beginning. Everything about our experience there was professional and safe. We love our birth story- our experience was beautiful, full of love and trust! We have even joked about moving back to Charleston for 2 months before our next child is due this May just so we can experience birth there again. I cannot think of a more ideal place to bring a new person into this world than CBP!
