Luminescent Orchestrii

When: Wed., Oct. 20 2010
Price: $8
The Brooklyn-based Luminescent Orchestrii returns to Charleston with an exotic set of music and a double-duty schedule. The combo plays a mix of Romanian gypsy music and theatrical rock on guitar, bass, and duo fiddles during a workshop at West Ashley venue Hungry Monk Music from 4-6 p.m. before heading over to the Pour House for a two-set gig at 10 p.m. Hungry Monk Music is the home of the Hungry Monks, a group guided by musicians and teachers Hazel Ketchum and John Holenko. The facility teaches all levels of music, from pre-school to college. Their workshops are usually held in groups of between five and 25 participants. Members of the Luminescent Orchestrii — Benjy Fox-Rosen on bass, violinists Sarah Alden and Rima Fand, along with Sxip Shirey on nearly everything else — will teach these tunes on violin (by ear), but any instrument can participate. “Learning tunes by ear is a traditional way to study music and a great exercise in melodic dictation,” says Holenko. “The culmination of this whole process is the entire group playing the tunes they have learned.” —T. Ballard Lesemann
