Local high schoolers compete in Poetry Out Loud

Poetry Slam

On Sun. Jan. 24, the Lowcountry Initiative for the Literary Arts will be holding its “Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest.” Students from 12 local high schools will compete for a spot in the state-level competition. The winner of that competition will receive $200 and an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the National Finals where they could win up to $20,000.

The Lowcountry Initiative for the Literary Arts seeks to “nurture and promote” the literary arts by sponsoring this event along with the South Carolina Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation. The regional contest will be held from 2-4 p.m. at the College of Charleston Alumni Memorial Hall at 65 George Street. Call (803) 734-8696 for more info.
