Karaoke can be cringe-worthy. A poor soul gets up to belt one out, thinking his or her voice is on par with Beyoncé, only to fall flat — really flat. Woolfe Street Playhouse is taking some of the shame out of karaoke with their first round of — hopefully many — lip sync contests. “It just seemed like a really fun and fabulous idea,” says Keely Enright, producing artistic director of the playhouse. “Of course, Jimmy Fallon’s been doing them and we did them in college, but I love the idea of something that’s been around for a while that doesn’t get done a lot.” And if you’ve seen the likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and John Krasinski duel it out with Fallon on The Tonight Show, you know how it’s done. Participants pick three songs to lip sync their hearts out to for a minute. There’ll be three rounds with the winners moving forward to the final round. Interested contestants should have already registered, but if you’re dying to show off your voiceless talents, Enright suggests calling the theater to see if they can squeeze you in. The bar will be open to keep the drinks — and courage — flowing.
