Re: “S.C. natural birth centers could face closure by state regulators

My name is Lillian Blakwood, I am a certified surgical technologist. I strongly believe in hospital care an medical intervention, however, I believe more in the choice and safety of a midwife and his or her laboring facility and abilities. With what I know medically, I know that things including labor can go south quickly. I know how surgery and an OR works, but I also know high levels of medical intervention can also make a situation worse without it needing to be. Labor isn't a medically needed intervention. Labor is natural and can be done naturally and safe with proper help. That's where a midwife comes in. This hits very close to home because in August 2012 I had my daughter through Charleston Birth Place. All my prenatal care through them and loved it. I loved that I had the choice to not be in a hospital. To not feel like I was being pushed into a corner. I ended up being 8 days overdue and being induced at Trident Hospital, but I had my midwife by my side! Induction turned to c-section, but I had my midwife by my side in the OR helping with my surgery! Midwives and the centers they practice in create a bond like no other. They lower cost and reduce the risk of surgical intervention. I feel it's because of Charleston Birth Place that I have our daughter Brennan. Yes, our labor didn't turn out to be the water birth perfection we wanted, but what it turned out to be was a surgical procedure I felt safe in and turned a situation I didn't want into one I will never forget! If you shut down CBP you will ultimately be denying hundreds of mothers the chance to experience something wonderful and safe. You will be taking our right to choice away. The choice of how we wish to have our babies. If I could do it all over again I would and with the same center. CBP you are forever in my families hearts!!
