Re: “Nerd Culture is Rape Culture: Elliot Rodger and the misogynistic world of the geek

It's bad enough that nerds are characterized as losers due to their nonconformity and demonized by society. I can't imagine any socioeconomic standard that lists them as anything but a marginalized group in society. They're the frequent victim of badmouthing, outright violence and other forms of bullying. In some areas of the country, the bullying of nerds almost competes with racial persecution. Seen it myself as an African American kid who struggled against racism. White kids had their gangs, black kids had their gangs to fight back. The nerds had nothing, not even the teachers had their back. Only gays and transgendered people face more hate than nerds did/do.

It's bad enough that rapists and killers like Charles Manson and Richie Ramirez gets more positive attention from women in a year than all the nerds around the world ever will, combined, in their lifetimes. And that's pretty much an indisputable statistical fact, whether you feel me saying it is offensive or not. And now you want to push their unpopularity up a notch and associate Elliot Rodgers with nerd culture? Elliot Rodgers, the same guy who worked out and posted on bodybuilding forums (definitely NOT your typical nerd activity), the same guy whose first murder victims were nerds? You've basically demeaned nerd culture from the already unpopular world that it is, to the level of domestic terrorism. For no good reason, based on a whole lot of erroneous reasoning and unjustified, raw prejudice.

Great move, Chris Haire. Thanks to you this is going to filter down to the immature juvenile world where nerds are born and made - in school. Given human nature and its predisposition toward hate and prejudice, it's an absolute certainty that many parents have read your article - and Arthur Chu's, which you seemed to have gotten this idea from. Your article, and Chu's, will reinforce their already existing prejudices, then they will communicate it to their immature kids, and voila! Now in their minds they will for once formulate an actual RIGHTEOUS purpose for their physical assaults and verbal abuse of nerds.

But what am I saying, you and Arthur Chu probably intended to cause this escalation of abuse. After all it increases your standing with women as 'superior' nerds.
