Re: “Recalling South Carolina's 1988 school shooting

No one in Greenwood escaped being touched by this. I would like to say this is a wonderful community. Years later, after multiple and painful reconstructive surgeries, Kat still devoted herself to children by coaching softball. My daughter was one of her players. The school is now named for then principal Eleanor Rice. My grandchildren attend now and there is an unprecedented sense of care and pride, but mostly love, in this school. This was fostered by Rice, who passed in 2010, and continues today. You can no longer enter the building without being buzzed in. And there is a second set of doors you must then check into the office to pass through. I love this school and I love Greenwood. This community, these families, students, teachers, administrators, overcame and continue to overcome. These 2 girls would be in their 30s now. We should never look back and make this about politics. This is about people. I'm thankful my grandchildren go to a school where they focus on kids as well as on academia. It's about the whole person, not just a state score on an exam. Thankful for teachers who are attentive to all the needs of the kids, not just a math lesson. And I'm thankful for principal Julian Gale for picking up the torch and carrying it forward. May we never forget, continue to heal, and continue to learn. I pray for our city, county, state, and country, that this never happens again.
