Bonnie Caracciolo's Johns Island quail farm keeps her busy. Licensed as a commercial quail breeder by the state's Department of Natural Resources, Caracciolo breeds and pen-raises Japanese quail under a strictly enforced set of regulations for health, sanitation, diet, and comfort. All the chicks are hatched on site from eggs that Caracciolo gathers at least twice daily from laying hens. Her farm recently qualified to be an authorized testing agent of South Carolina's National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP), working with Clemson University's Livestock-Poultry Health program whose guidelines are recognized by the USDA, the FDA, and the S.C. Department of Agriculture. If you are interested in visiting the quail farm or purchasing quail eggs, give her a call or send an e-mail, because appointments are necessary.
