Ladies' Arm Wrestling Tournament

When: Thu., Dec. 18, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $7/entry, $5/register to wrestle
Normally, we use arm wrestling to settle heated debates, like who’s the hottest member of One Direction or who’s the best part of The Mindy Project. For the record, it’s Harry Styles and Morgan Tookers. But on Thursday, the dueling of the arms will be used for a greater cause: We Are Family and the TransLove Fund. Here’s how the tournament will work: prospective wrestlers must register on site by 9:30 p.m. and pay $5. There’ll be two categories, brawny and brawnier. Lily Slay will be the ref, and DJ Party Dad will spin some tunes to keep the contestants — and the crowd — pumped. (Might we suggest, Jock Jams.) Half the money goes to the operating costs for We Are Family and the other half to the TransLove Fund. “In the past, the tournament served to help one person until he was able to get his medication,” explains Melissa Moore, executive director of We Are Family. “This time, we’ll be awarding grants in 2015 for transpeople that will go toward helping people who can’t get jobs, help them transition medically, and help with legal costs to transition.” There’ll also be a raffle for a chance to win some prizes ($1 for 1, $5 for 10, and $10 for 25). Prizes will include an original cross-stitch work by Megan Jean, hand-knitted dinosaurs from local artists, Tutus from Poof, gifts from Tin Roof, fitness classes, and more. The tourney will also feature thumb wrestling for $3. If your strength lies mostly in your feet and sweet moves, the tournament will also feature a dance-off between rounds, where you can challenge an opponent and two representatives will collect dollars from the audience. The one with the most bills wins the dance off.
