Koffin Kats w/ The Defilers, The Redliners

When: Sat., Dec. 5 2009
Price: $7
Though they might share more sonic similarity with Tiger Army or the post-Danzig Misfits, Michigan’s Koffin Kats can trace their lineage to the grand psychobilly tradition of The Meteors and The Cramps, using ’50s rockabilly as a foundation upon which to build a reverb-soaked, amphetamine-addled vehicle for greaseball hedonism and B-movie kitsch. Unlike many of their pomp-sporting peers, the Koffin Kats have shown a willingness to move beyond the stereotypical hoots and hollers and whammy-bar fetishism to highlight the lead vocal talents of obvious Misfits-scholar Vic Victor. Tommy Koffin’s guitar leads, likewise, borrow as much from ’90s punk and power-pop as from Sun Studios, lending the band a more varied sound than most psychobilly bands. The Motor City trio’s fifth LP, Forever for Hire, was released in October. Like-minded trios The Redliners (from Tampa, Fla.) and The Defilers (from Charleston) open. —Bryan Reed
