It's a Scandinavian thing. Prolific Norwegian pianist, composer, and novelist Ketil Bjørnstad went from performing classical music with the Oslo Philharmonic to more cinematic and jazz-influenced pieces over the last 20 years. His crisp style and clean technique reflect the typical dry wit of his homeland.

He lures power from simplicity. Bjørnstad has released more than 50 albums and published more than 30 books in his career. He knows how to tell stories, conjure emotions, and guide listeners with ease. His latest recording, The Rainbow, is a solo piano collection that initially seems light and delicate, but the moods gradually change and shift in a powerful manner.

Keeping it simple works well on the piano. On his own, Bjørnstad focuses on a more minimalist idiom. "I rediscovered the pleasure of exploring the grand piano," he says. "I was reminded of the extraordinary richness of the instrument's sound, especially in a small and naked format."
