Re: “S.C. natural birth centers could face closure by state regulators

The World Health Organization disagrees with the attitude of South Carolina's DHEC: See what WHO has to say about the quality, competence and health outcomes of Midwifery led care:
I am a certified nurse midwife working in a hospital in rural Hawaii where we have no operating room, no anesthesia, and where c-sections and physicians are an air-ambulance ride away. It may take 3 hours to accomplish a transfer of care in labor, and yet our tranfers are made at the behest of MIDWIVES with no second opinion from a physician, except that we call to get an accepting physician at the referral center (who are happy to oblige!). We are a hospital, yet function very much like a birth center. This reaction that the SC DHEC is suggesting, that a doctor needs to come to the birth center to assess an emergency before transfer is made- it restricts and delays care! "Primum non nocere- First do no harm." When beaurocrats cross the line and dictate health care, they do GREAT harm. The question of the safety of midwife-led care AND care in Birth Centers has been settled by large scale studies from around the globe! Your job is to improve access to (evidence-based) care, not move your citizenry backwards! "He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him." Can we PLEASE stop reactionary legislation!?? Please! Come on South Carolina! Your citizens deserve better!
