She's an all-American songbird. Kansas-born, New York-based jazz vocalist Karrin Allyson first appeared at Spoleto Festival USA 15 years ago. She ventures in and around the familiar framework of the Great American Songbook with her current ensemble on latest disc, Round Midnight. The 11-song collection demonstrates her impressive depth, range, and sense of emotion.

Tickling the ivories. The Grammy-nominated vocalist is also an accomplished pianist and arranger. The ivories play a key role, rhythmically and melodically, in her elegant set — from Broadway and pop to be-bop and blues.

From folk-rock beginnings. Allyson's flexibility was always an asset. "I didn't start out singing jazz. I started out singing folk music, singer-songwriter stuff, and even a little bit of rock 'n' roll," she says. "I was into a lot of different styles. I think a lot that shows in my discography."
