Re: “James Petigru dared to challenge Confederacy

There was another character that swam against the current: The Presbyterian minister John Layfayette Girardeau. He was the pastor of Zion Presbyterian Church @ 123 Calhoun-site of a hotel today and diagonal to Emmanuel AME. What is shocking about Zion was pre-civil war, the congregation was integrated-and that white and blacks sat together-remember,this was pre-civil war in the South. Girardeau preferred this congregation to all others and turned down opportunities to serve in more prestigious churches. In the Civil War, Girardeau was a Chaplain in the Confederacy and ministered to war wounded of both gray and blue.
