Re: “Why are white men turning on women?

A few years ago, one might have dismissed this OpEd piece as an extremist reaction. Not today. GamerGate has done irreparable harm, not only to the video game industry, but to society itself. I've been following this debacle since two days after the initial spark that started it (Aug 18th, if you're curious). What's utterly impossible to understand, for me, is how so many people can be mmanipulated into helping a relatively small demographic attack, harass and threaten women & minorities. Here's how it all started, in a nutshell -

* Zoe Quinn's ex posts a blog entry claiming she cheated with a bunch of guys
* One of them writes for a game site
* Said ex enlists the bottom feeders on 4chan to, as they specifically put it, get her to kill herself
* While they're at it they expand their targets to include Anita Sarkeesian, Leigh Alexander & other women having anything to do with gaming
* One semi-intelligent denizen notices that it looks bad just attacking women so they make up a cause celeb, "Ethics in Game Journalism" as a smoke screen, using misinformation, manufactured proof and outright lies
* They also use many fake accounts to start the Twitter tag #NotYourShield to trick women & minorities into, ironically enough, being their shield.

And the rest, as they say, is history. All of this can be verified by chat logs and various blog posts. I've pointed people to said resources but, as is par for zealots, they refuse to even look at them.

To Ms. Pandolfi I say, don't let this get to far under your skin. Be the example of what you want your kids to learn. And try to remember that GamerGate is really a small group of hate mongers who've tricked a large number of otherwise "normal" people into helping them. The latter deserve pity instead of anger.
