JJ Grey & Mofro Staff Pick

When: Fri., July 16 2010
Price: $23, $20 (adv.)
With the release of their new album, Georgia Warhorse — which features collaborations with Toots Hibbert and Derek Trucks — a little more than a month away, JJ Grey & Mofro roll into town this weekend for a two-night stand at the Windjammer. Last June, Grey and company roared through a smoky set of their “front-porch soul,” sprinkling fan favorites like “Dirtfloorcracka,” “Ybor City,” and “Lochloosa” into the steady rotation of tunes from their most recent album, Orange Blossoms (2008) — as well as a stompin’ version of “Stagger Lee” and an uptempo cover of the John Anderson song “Seminole Wind.” Anyone who’s seen JJ perform knows that he oozes backwoods soul, and his solid rhythm section and understated horn accompaniments always provide the necessary backdrop for passionate vocals. JJ mentioned his fondness for the Windjammer last time, so expect plenty of swampy grooves and a nice preview of the band’s upcoming fifth album. —Eric Liebetrau
