Thank you Charleston City Paper for keeping us updated on this important story! So glad women in SC still have choices for where they give birth!

Re: “Rally for Charleston Birth Place today at 4:30

Thanks for keeping up updated on this…. it's far less about where a woman gives birth, and more about the state removing freedom of choice to give birth outside a hospital if a woman wants to deliver naturally without rushing or pressure.

What the folks at DHEC won't seem to acknowledge is that this new interpretation of a regulation that has been adhered to by CBP since it opened its doors is both absurd and DANGEROUS for mothers and babies. Dr. Martin, CBP's on-call OB, stands with the Birthplace on this matter, and fully trusts the midwives (who SPECIALIZE in childbirth) to decide when hospital care is needed in an emergency situation. And when that decision has been made, it only makes sense to go directly to the hospital immediately. There is nothing an OB can do at the birthing center that the midwives cannot do… if an OB is required, a hospital with its emergency resources is required. Why waste time bringing a doctor to the birthing center?

Why don't we trust the experts here, the midwives and doctors involved, and allow Charleston Birth Place to carry on safely, providing a natural, loving birth environment, as they have since they began?

Re: “S.C. natural birth centers could face closure by state regulators

Consider the freedoms that are being thwarted by shutting down birthing centers! Birthing centers allow women to have a more comfortable, natural place to labor and deliver their babies than a hospital, and they provide much more individualized care.

I had my baby at Charleston Birth Place in July, and my prenatal care and delivery process were absolutely amazing. I plan to have more children, and would be devastated if I could not go back to CBP.

The staff and midwives are completely professional, and truly have women's best interest in mind. They are less than a mile from a major hospital, and have excellent emergency transport procedures in place.

They also work MUCH more closely with their patients than "standard doctors" and are able to foresee any potential complications before hand - transferring them before an emergency happens. You also have to be labeled as a low-risk pregnancy before you can be considered to be a patient there.

PLEASE KEEP CBP UP AND RUNNING!! Women should have the right to choose where they give birth!
