In like JLin

Local designer Jamie Lin Snider is spunky, chic, and altogether charming, and the same can be said about her new boutique. Situated on Upper King Street, the grand opening on Friday was a dramatic unveiling of JLINSNIDER, as family, friends, and fans packed the house to support the Charleston Fashion Week alum.

People milled around the store and gazed at the prints on the wall from fashion shows and photo shoots, as well as a mannequin centerpiece wearing one of Snider’s elaborate custom-made dresses. The shop serves two major fashion forces in town: the edgy, high-end fashionista and the frugal babe on a budget. Alligator purses and bath products line the walls, glass cases hold one-of-a-kind jewelry and sunglasses, and a vintage collection in the back features everything from maxi skirts to fur coats. True to the designer’s offbeat and quirky aesthetic, racks are stocked with sheer dresses, body chains, and loud shirts with wicked prints. Snider’s signature pieces are borderline scandalous, but that’s no surprise to anyone who’s kept an eye on her career.

“I like designing pieces that have a little unexpected surprise,” Snider said, wearing a black dress with a matching vintage negligee underneath. “And I’m so happy to finally be able to showcase all my hard work here.”

Another little surprise presented itself in the courtyard: an artisan’s market, featuring trinkets and jewelry from Polyesterstella, 16 Penny Gallery, Pretty Little Things, and several others gave patrons a sneak peak of what to expect during the Holy City Artist and Fleas event next weekend. A live DJ filled the air with ambient beats and eclectic tunes, and beer and wine added to the crowd’s buzzing excitement. Looks like King Street just got a little more avant garde.
