Re: “Is Charleston next in line to take a stand on plastic bags?

Good article! A couple of points here. Novolex has a whole line of products, not just plastic bags. For all we know, if plastic bags were to be eliminated it may only cost them one job if it is all automated. We need to tour the plant to get the facts on this. I just don't buy the fact that elimination of plastic bags will shut down the company. They have many product lines.
Also, when the cashier uses a plastic bag they only put 2 or 3 items at most in the plastic bags. With canvas or reusable bags or paper, it seems they can pack in 10 to 12 items. So if the plastic cost 3 cents and the paper cost 10 cents, the cost works out the same.
And yes, there are many, many issues we need to solve on the planet, but let's start somewhere. Plastic bags are not necessary and we did fine without them before they were introduced in the late 70's.
Remember, McDonalds and Burger King and all used to use Styrofoam and plastic? They switched about 20 years ago. Did it put them out of business.
No one likes change but we need to change. We are doing way too much harm to our sea creatures and humans and our planet. Let's clean up our act.
