India Fest

When: Sun., Oct. 17, 12-5 p.m. 2010
Price: Free
In a three-year American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau between 2006 and ’08, it was estimated that there are 871 Indian-Americans living in Charleston County. Which is only about 0.3 percent of the area’s entire population. That isn’t a lot, especially considering there’s a billion Indians living in India. But the local community is strong, and they’ll be represented at this weekend’s India Fest. Hosted by the India Association of Greater Charleston, the event features demonstrations of yoga, Indian dance, sari wrapping, and mehndi (henna) application, as well as vegetarian and non-vegetarian food and other vendors. Jeffrey Cohen and Andrea Boyd of Jivamukti Yoga will demonstrate poses, followed by a presentation of traditional Indian dance (including Bollywood-style numbers). Finally, Rhythm Ranis will teach attendees how to dance to Bhangra music. “It’s a celebration of Indian food, music, and its rich culture — a glimpse of India from here in Charleston,” says IAGC Secretary Joyce Menon. —Susan Cohen
