Re: “Herb Silverman's newest essay collection suggests how we can be "good without God"

JAVSimson, you seem to be buying into the argumentum ad populum fallacy. The fact that lots of people throughout history were (and still are) superstitious is not evidence that gods are real. There is no evidence for the existence of any of the thousands of gods that people have manufactured to cover their ignorance, so there is no reason to believe.

There is as much evidence for the Tooth Fairy as there is for any god - i.e. none at all, and I'm sure you have no qualms about asserting that the Tooth Fairy doesn't exist. In fact, I suspect that you'd view an adult who professed belief in the Tooth Fairy to be delusional, despite the fact that you don't know for sure that she doesn't exist.

Why give a god more respect, when all the evidence shows that the likelihood of a god existing is infinitesimally small? Is it fear of the unknown? Fear of death? Hope for an afterlife? Because it's certainly not rational or honest to profess belief when all the evidence stands against the idea that gods are real.

Gods aren't real. Grow up!

"I'm agnostic. I'm one of those wishy-washy irreligious folks who doesn't quite want to claim the title of "atheist.""

Okay, so if you aren't an atheist, which god do you believe in? Because agnosticism doesn't address the issue of faith - it's about knowledge, and EVERYONE is agnostic, whether they adopt the label or not, because it's impossible to know everything about anything.

You either believe in a god, or you don't. There is no wishy-washy middle ground.
