I-526 meetings go local

The new parkway pitch for the Interstate 526 extension will be running from Savannah Highway to the James Island Connector, but the state Department of Transportation first scheduled two public hearings on the peninsula, not in West Ashley or on the two islands where the pavement trucks may be rolling.

We appreciated the irony in forcing concerned residents to take the long trip downtown, fighting the very traffic on Maybank Highway or Savannah Highway that the new route is purported to address. But the humor was lost on said concerned residents and state officials like Rep. Leon Stavrinakis (D-Charleston), who lobbied for meetings within the community.

Here's the updated meeting schedule (all meetings are at 6 p.m.):

• Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 at Burke High School, 244 President St.

• Sept. 7 at West Ashley High School, 4060 West Wildcat Blvd.

• Sept. 8 at James Island Charter High School, 1000 Ft. Johnson Road

• Sept. 9 at St. John's High School, 1518 Main Road.
