Some days when the grind gets too rough, you may want to leave all your responsibilities behind and join the circus. Maybe that’s a bit extreme, but you could still consider checking out Holy City Cirque’s Second Annual Variety Show, Playshops, and Fundraiser. There you can watch and gawk at acroyogis, belly dancers, fire spinners, sword dancers, and more. The majority of the performers are local, but a few are traveling from Atlanta and Athens, Ga., Asheville, N.C, and even Florida. Children and adults over the age of seven are encouraged to participate in a variety of playshops, including acroyoga, aerial silks, juggling, hooping, and slacklining. Don’t miss Kari McDuffie, member of Acroyoga Charleston and event coordinator, in a group performance with six synchronized pairs of performers or her duet with acro-partner Gregory Gway. “We have one thing we just learned, it’s called a death drop. I’m upside down, in a handstand on his feet, and I fall over backwards so he catches me in a seated position. It is kind of hard to explain,” McDuffie says. The name alone is frightening. Funds raised from the event will be donated to Dragon Boat Charleston, a non-profit that promotes physical and mental wellness to local cancer survivors.
