Holiday Swing w/The Charleston Jazz Orchestra

When: Wed., Nov. 21, 7 p.m. 2012
Phone: (843) 641-0011
Price: $25-$40
If the idea of sitting through The Nutcracker again has you running for the hills, then apparently you haven’t been to one of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra’s annual Holiday Swing performances. Providing a welcome break from the endless rotation of Frosty, Rudolph, and “Silent Night,” the CJO has made a tradition out of performing Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s arrangement of the “Nutcracker Suite” which conductor Charlton Singleton says is something you don’t want to miss. “Duke and Billy’s arrangement of this piece is just one of the many examples of their genius,” Singleton says. “There are nine movements that we perform, and they contain the same themes that are heard in the original, with a lot of swing and bounce to them.” In addition to the “Nutcracker Suite,” the CJO will give audience members a highlight reel of some of the best tunes from the past year’s performances.
