Holiday Swing w/ the Charleston Jazz Orchestra

When: Wed., Nov. 23 2011
Price: $30 (adult), $25 (seniors), $20 (students)
The award-winning Charleston Jazz Orchestra has made an annual ritual out of paying tribute to late pianist, composer, and bandleader Duke Ellington. Around the holidays, they especially enjoy playing the 1960 Nutcracker Suite, a collection of jazz interpretations of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker written by Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Led by conductor/trumpeter Charlton Singleton (pictured), the 20-member CJO hits the Music Hall stage during Holiday Swing, a program that concludes the 2011 season. The show follows the recent passing of Jazz Artists of Charleston board member, music historian, and producer Jack McCray. The independent JAC presents the CJO events; McCray served as the emcee at every concert. The orchestra will perform a variety of popular pieces in the second set as well. Doors open at 6 p.m., and showtime is 7 p.m.
